The Monastery of The Virgin Akrotirianis  and of Saint John The Theologian at Toplou Sitia was built during the 14th century and ever since then has played a key role in both the social and winemaking History of the area.It cultivates organic vineyards and olive groves and produces  wine, raki and olive oil which is bottled and sold to both local and international markets.

It is well worth visiting and can be combined with a trip to the beautiful beaches in the vicinity, Ancient Itano and the nearby palm forest beach at Vai.  

The Monastery holds its annual celebration on the 26th September, which is a great event attended by many pilgrims.
